Duty Free shopping in France is only available for passengers departing to a non-European Union destination country. If, for example, you are travelling to Germany or Italy from France, the lowest prices will not always be available to you. Stores with Tax Free or Duty Free discounts are offered in the departure lounge of all international airports, but Duty Free on Arrival is not available, regardless of where you are coming from.

For those travelling to another EU Member Country, products are also available for sale, but the prices include tax, (Tax Paid), which is usually the local Sales Tax or Value Added Tax. This is because Duty Free shopping no longer exists for those travelling between EU member states. However, many airport stores discount certain goods for intra-EU travellers. Products such as perfumes, cosmetics, leather goods, luxuries or food items can often be purchased at similar prices to those actually leaving the EU.

Alcohol or Tobaccos have a different tax structure and they attract extra Duties, sometimes these local Excise Duties are not too high, it depends on the Country. In France, the Tax on Liquors is quite low, so even if you can only buy goods 'Tax Paid' the prices could well seem like a bargain compared to where you live. For cigarettes and tobaccos, taxes are generally rising, so the lowest prices for these products will only be available to those travelling beyond EU borders.

Our global airport shopping guide is designed to assist you and help with the understanding of these various rules, some of which are quite confusing for travellers. If you search for your next destination in the box above, the Customs icon will tell you your limits, allowances, exemptions or any special rules for your next port of call.

European Union member states also operate a tax-free shopping scheme where visitors to these countries can obtain a sales tax refund on the goods they purchase during their visit. Foreign visitors who are not resident of The EU and are returning to a non EU country have the facility to use the Tax-Rebate retail scheme where the local EU sales tax, otherwise known as VAT/TVA, is refunded to you when you depart from Europe.

The refund booths can be found in most major EU airports and more details are available in our tax free and downtown shopping section, under land travel searches.
